Tried & Tested – Cushion Foundations.. are they as good as they sound?

Cushion Foundations seem to be coming into trend hot and heavy, since the end of 2015. They take a modern approach into a more handbag friendly, liquid foundation option but are they any good? I’ve recently tried out 4 which are available on the market from some of my favourite brands.

Overall the textures are pretty similar, although I found the Estee Lauder “Double Wear Makeup To Go” formula to be slightly heavier, in comparison to the others. The Cushion Foundations in my opinion do take a little getting use to, after having used liquids for quite some time but make for a great alternative.

Here’s A little run down on each one and what makes it different to the others, I was kindly sent all 4 of these but opinions are my own 100%

Mecca CosmeticaIn a great light compact Foundation (shade Fair) $71 NZD – I really love this product, it’s perfect for an every day no makeup look with it’s sheer coverage, but it leaves the skin super luminous and fresh looking too. I feel like this for me personally will be better put to use in the Summer time. This is because it has an SPF of 30 and is perfect for evening out your skin tone naturally, whilst protecting it from the suns rays at the same time. Not only is it easy to pop in your hand bag but little to no effort is required in applying it. When I tried this I wore my Hourglass primer underneath, and the longevity was pretty good. I only felt the need to touch up after 4-6 hours of wear.

This compact has to be my favourite out of them all, it’s super chic and on trend with it’s rose gold accents and funky fonting. It’s easy to open and comes with a wee sponge which is great for on the go touch ups. Refills Available

Clinique – Super City Block BB Cushion Compact SPF 50 $65 NZDClinique have created their compact as the perfect way for your skin to face everyday life flawlessly. Unfortunately the shade sent to me is super dark so it’s hard to see how it looks properly. When I tested this I looked like an oopma loopma, it was quite entertaining. But it still gave me a good idea on how the product felt and performed on my skin. The best part about this one is that the coverage is buildable, and the formula provides sweat and humidity resistance while the matte finish controls oil and shine for hours – Now this is my kinda product!

Clinique have really nailed the BB Cushion in the aspect of it being totally adaptable to your own personal needs, whilst providing your skin with optimal protection.  Again this is perfect for the Summertime, or if you live somewhere where the weather conditions are pretty sunny and mild all year round. Another plus with this product is a refill is available for when you run out, I personally think this is such a good idea as not only do you save money but your essentially recycling in some ways too.

YSL Le Cushion Encre De Peau (Shade 20) $100 NZD comes the cushion compact version, Le Cushion Encre De Peau. Like the original, Le Cushion offers the “feels like a feather, wears like an ink” technology, all in a super-convenient, spill-free compact.

Encre De Peau is presented in the stunning signature YSL dress code of a black and gold compact. With two compartments, the top holds the pillow applicator and a very decent-sized mirror, and the bottom, the cushion. This formula I have found you need to work fast with, but it provides you with a medium coverage that feels totally weightless on the skin.

Le Cushion also leaves you with a matte, yet hydrated feel and sits beautifully on the skin. YSL Le Cushion Encre De Peau also has an SPF23 and once again is great for touch up’s on the go. YSL Le Cushion Encre De Peau is available on counter now in six shades, with the option of a refill also at $72.00.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Makeup To Go (Shade 2C3 Fresco) – Now Estee Lauder is known for their flawless foundations, and this little pocket rocket is no exception. A Dewy, Luminous, Hydrating, Liquid makeup in an innovative, spill-proof compact Makeup to go is suitable for all skin tones and types.

Enriched with an intense tri-moisture complex, this makeup is a different formula than the original Double Wear Stay-in-Place liquid foundation. It leaves skin looking dewy, luminous, smooth and natural. In the press of a button you can customise your look – one press for a light coverage and two presses for a medium to full look.

I personally wasn’t a fan of the formula at first, as I do prefer something more matte and felt a little greasy after an hour or so.But with a little translucent powder through my T-zone, I was set to continue on with my day.

So who was the winner? In my eyes each formula was very similar in texture but performance they each had their own benefits. I do still find myself going back to a full coverage product, so I will be going with the YSL option in first place this time. I will definitely be using all of these again, but I found with the YSL Le Cushion Encre De Peau it was a great match colour wise, it’s dressed beautifully in stunning packaging and most of all I barely had to touch up at all.

I’d love to know your thoughts if you have tried any of the above ♥
