The West Coast is not only home to beautiful scenery and native bush, it’s also home to so many other hidden gems such as Woodpecker Hut. This weekend we spent the night at Woodpecker Hut and it was such an awesome experience. Not only is the Hut itself amazing – I will go into detail on that soon, but it was sooo good for the soul!
Working a job that involves me often being on my phone a lot, it was so nice to be able to fully disconnect and relax thanks to the hut being off the grid. That’s right team, there’s no cell reception here, so it’s back to good ol fashioned banter for the length of your stay.
Set upon a coastal cliff top, just off the Great Coast Highway near Punakaiki, your conversation will consist a lot of “Look at that view” and rightfully so, the property and surroundings are nothing short of absolutely stunning.
So aside from the view what makes Woodpecker Hut so amazing? Woodpecker Hut is completely off-the-grid. Hot water is heated using a gas califont and cooking gas is supplied via LPG gas bottles with a small bbq and stove top provided. Solar power provides lighting and a wood-burning stove provides warmth. Not to mention it was built by a local builder and artist – pretty cool right!
The team at Canopy Camping have gone out of their way to ensure you are getting a stay unlike any other with this rustic vibe property. Split into two parts the “Honey Hut” and the “Huckleberry” Hut are joined together by a covered outdoor kitchen and living area. One hut is where you will find the master bedroom, with a super comfy king size bed and soft modern decor, the other is the lounge. Within the lounge you will find a wood burning stove, beautiful furnishings with a luxe feel and a ladder to the left leading to an almost hidden bed for any extra guests.
It doesn’t stop there, Woodpecker Hut even has a composting toilet yup that’s right – I myself wasn’t quite sure what we might find when we arrived, but don’t be put off because it really isn’t bad at all. To align with their eco friendly approach to nature, situated within the bathroom, you will find what i like to call the glamorous version of a long drop.Everything is super clean and the bathroom also includes a shower and sink with hot and cold water.
Now onto the best part the HOT TUB! Perfectly place on the deck with “that view”, you will find yourself easily unwinding in the wood fired tub. We were lucky enough that Jed had already warmed the tub up for our arrival, so you can bet your boots as soon as the car was unloaded, we were into that thing pretty damn fast and on perfect timing for sunset.
Let me just say Breath taking!! This really was the icing on the cake to the ultimate experience, we even woke early to sit in the tub and watch the sun rise it was that good! So if you are looking for the perfect getaway with a loved one (Hint Hint as a Honeymoon idea), a weekend away from a busy life with the girls, or maybe you just want to go somewhere surrounded by real untouched New Zealand beauty and take the kids, I highly suggest checking out Woodpecker Hut.
However long you stay, I can guarantee you will enjoy every single second of it. Just keep in mind the nights and mornings are cold in Winter, so make sure you take the appropriate clothing along with you!Don’t forget to also go for a wander and explore the rest of the property, there really is so much to be seen.
Thank you so much to Canopy Camping for having us, we cannot wait to check out more of your properties!
